Medicare Part D
Open enrollment, without the guesswork.
Every autumn, Part D plans change their formularies, premiums and preferred pharmacies. Reviewing your plan once a year is the single easiest way to avoid overpaying for medications you already take.

Medicare Open Enrollment. Changes you make in this window take effect January 1. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, there is a second window from January 1 to March 31.
Why it is worth reviewing every year
Most people enroll once and then leave the plan alone. That is completely understandable — and it is also how people end up paying hundreds of dollars more than they need to.
The reason is simple: your plan changes even when your health does not. Between one year and the next, a Part D plan can:
- Change its formulary — drop a medication you take, or move it to a higher tier.
- Raise the premium or the deductible, sometimes substantially.
- Change which pharmacies are preferred, which can change your copay depending on where you fill.
- Add new restrictions such as prior authorization or quantity limits on something you were getting easily before.
And your own list changes too. A medication started in March, or one your prescriber stopped, can shift which plan works out cheapest for you.

Where to get help reviewing your options
Bensalem Pharmacy does not sell insurance and does not recommend plans. Below are three routes people in our area use. All three are free to you, and you are under no obligation to use any of them.

Free, unbiased county counseling
PA MEDI is Pennsylvania's Medicare Education and Decision Insight program, formerly known as APPRISE. Counselors are trained volunteers who are not paid by any insurance company and cannot sell you anything. In Bucks County, call 267-880-5700 and choose option 5 to book a free appointment, in person or by phone.
Do it yourself
The Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov lets you enter your medications and see every plan available at your ZIP code, ranked by your estimated total yearly cost. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE any time, day or night. Bring your printed medication list and it takes about twenty minutes.
What we can help with at the pharmacy
- Printing your current medication list with strengths and directions, ready to take to any plan review.
- Answering questions about the medications themselves — whether a generic exists, whether a different strength or quantity changes the cost, whether there is a therapeutic alternative worth asking your prescriber about.
- Telling you what you are paying now, so you have a real number to compare against.
- Getting you set up once you have chosen — bring us your new card in January and we will update your profile.
A word of caution about unsolicited calls. Open enrollment season brings a wave of aggressive phone calls, mailers and television advertising. Medicare will never call you out of the blue asking for your Medicare number or bank details. If a call feels like pressure, hang up and ring someone you chose yourself.
Common questions about open enrollment
When is Medicare open enrollment?
Medicare Open Enrollment, also called the Annual Election Period, runs from October 15 through December 7 every year. Changes you make during that window take effect on January 1. There is also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31 for people already in a Medicare Advantage plan.
Why should I review my Part D plan if nothing has changed?
Because the plan changes even when you do not. Every year plans revise their formulary, their premiums, their deductibles and which pharmacies are preferred. A plan that was a good fit last year can cost noticeably more this year for the exact same medications.
What should I have ready before I review my options?
A current list of every medication you take, with the strength and how often you take it. Ask us at the counter and we will print your medication list for you. It also helps to have your Medicare card and the name of your current plan.
Does Bensalem Pharmacy sell Medicare plans?
No. We are a pharmacy, not an insurance agency. We do not sell insurance, we do not recommend any particular plan, and we have no financial interest in which plan you choose. What we can do is print your medication list and answer questions about the medications themselves.
Is there free help available that is not tied to any insurance company?
Yes. PA MEDI is Pennsylvania's free, unbiased Medicare counseling program, run through the county. In Bucks County you can reach them at 267-880-5700, option 5. You can also compare every plan yourself at Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
What happens if I miss the December 7 deadline?
In most cases your current plan simply continues into the next year with whatever changes it has made. You would generally have to wait until the next Open Enrollment unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, for example if you move, lose other coverage, or qualify for Extra Help.
Can changing plans affect where I fill my prescriptions?
It can. Some plans use preferred pharmacy networks that change your copay depending on where you fill. If staying with us matters to you, mention it when you review your options so it can be taken into account.
